ABOUT desi:NOW

Growing up between cultures, first and second-generation immigrants of the Indian subcontinent have been creating a space for self-expression that acknowledges their hyphenated identities as Desis outside of South Asia. Join us for an exciting and growing lineup of genre-bending creatives defining modern South Asian-American identity through the arts, including the international powerhouse Punjabi singer G. Sidhu; crystalline-voiced singer-songwriter and Television Academy honoree Rianjali; rap, R&B, and hip-hop artists Taizu, Rolex Rasathy, and Robin Dey; plus Desi and hip-hop beats from DJ Sharad and performances by IMGE Dance, SA Grooves, and Project Convergence that fuse Indian classical and traditional dance with hip-hop, tap, and more.

Ishita’s workshops focus on the Urban Indian way of thinking about movement and purpose to create a new avenue for storytelling. No classical or urban dance background required. Just a desire to think about movement a different way, whether you are a choreographer, dancer, or art enthusiast. Fourth Annual Gender Justice & the Arts Showcase

Sakhi for South Asian Women presents the fourth annual 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁s showcase, featuring IMGE as a guest artist. IMGE will present an excerpt of their latest work, “Territory".”

This year’s showcase will center on "reclaiming the power within and reviving the power of the collective." To reclaim the power within is to celebrate survivors’ and all individual’s agency over their own lives. To revive the power of the collective is to cultivate community resilience, overcome systemic inequalities, and recognize that the power of our movement lies in our willingness to rebuild collectively. By taking ownership of our collective story, we believe we can multiply the power within us to achieve real change. Let us all witness and contribute to our community’s resilience by exploring the power within and without through creative expression.

Doors open at 7:00pm. Show starts at 8:00pm. $20 online.

Program Description:

Named after dance the shows of modern dance legend Ted Shawn, as well as the formal definition of a one night stand, this series will showcase an eclectic group of movement artists for a show-run that will last only one night. 

This 2-night performance series will showcase movement-based groups and solo artist that are preserving the choreographers of the early modern dance movement, as well as artists that are translating the choreography of the past into the present moment through bold choices and innovative design.

Help build a school in India and increase the accessibility of education for students. The We Are India 2nd Annual Benefit Gala is a cocktail and dinner reception with open bar. Performances include singer-songerwriters Rianjali and NEEL, and Urban Indian dance troupe IMGE led by Ishita Mili.
